I composed this piece during the summer of 2007 in collaboration with Dr. Ovidiu Marinescu, the performer on the recording. Having recently returned from vacation in Beijing, China the piece inherently contains passages inspired by traditional Chinese music in tandem with a candid exploration of the instrument's capabilities and limitations. Though the piece is unaccompanied, I approached composing it as a self-accompanied work. In other words, the 'cello provides the accompanimental material for itself. It was a pleasure to compose this piece for Dr. Marinescu, and an even greater joy to hear it realized with such devotion and genuine excitement.
